This interactive map traces Charles Percier’s journey from Rome to Paris during the spring and summer of 1791. He walked about 2,360 miles. The drawings presented are all taken from an album of Percier’s sketches at the Bibliothèque de l’Institut de France, Ms 1010. Percier’s itinerary has been reconstructed based on his drawings from this album and a letter he wrote to the British neoclassical artist, John Flaxman, on November 13, 1791 recounting his trip (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Flaxman Letterbook, 61; translated by John Goodman). Excerpts from this letter accompany select drawings.
